“Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan”

  • Baba is born

    Babas legacy started, "In 1933, the year Baba was born" (24). Baba was born in 1933, where his perserverance and dedication were to be practiced. He would to be starting his new life as a father and idol to many others in Afghanistan.
  • Amir is born

    In The Kite Runner, Amir is born in "1964, just one year before giving birth to [Amir]" (6). Beginning his journey of life, Amir is born in the summer of 1963. The questions of what he will be like as a person builds up into Baba's head.
  • Hassan is born

    In The Kite Runner it is mentioned that Hassan "was born in the winter of 1964" (6). Hassan was born one year after Amir, which connects to me and how being so close in age with my sister can bring us closer. This can be seen in Hassan and Amir's friendship.
  • Baba begins making an orphanage

    On November 21, 1968, Baba made the decision to "build an orphanage" (13). Because doing this takes a lot of leadership and skill, it reflects upon the reasoning everyone looks up to him. He would like to reach out to more children and touch their lives.
  • Orphanage is complete

    In 1971, Baba completes the orphanage "three years [after it started]" (13). This demonstrates how determined Bab was to help other kids by completing this project. This can be seen through his perserverance.
  • Amir and Baba go to the lake together

    Amir and Baba go to "Ghargha Lake, [which is] a few miles north of Kabul" (13). In order to get closer to Baba, Amir lies after Baba asks him if Hassan can come and tells him that he isn't feeling well. Opposed to the right decision, Amir made a mistake of lying just to bring himself up.
  • Hassan receives surgery

    On Hassan's birthday, Baba ordered in a surgeon to fix his cleft lip. This can be seen:'I have summoned Dr. Kumar from New Delhi. Dr. Kumar is a plastic surgeon"'(45). This expresses a sense of care that Hassan needs to realize Baba gives to him. Although the love from Baba can be misinterpreted by Hassan, this present shows he does care for him.
  • Hassan gets raped

    Hassan gets raped by Assef. This came to a shock and dissatisfaction to all those involved. Amir watched and said “Hassan didn’t struggle, didn’t even whimper.” This shows us proof he saw it happening. This also shows us Hassan's weakness of fighting back,
  • Soviet union invades Afghanistan

    In 1979, the Soviet Union sent thousands of troops to Afghanistan in order to increase the communist government in the Democratic party of Afghanistan. As displayed in the article: "Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, has known little peace since 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded..." (1)
  • First troops landing into Kabul for attack

    The first troops parachuted into Kabul on December 27,1979 in order to assist Babrak Karmal. This can be seen in the article when said: "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec, 27,1979, to assist Babrak Karmal, who had become president in a coup within the Afghan Communist leadership."
  • Hassan and Farzana are killed

    Sadly in 1981, the taliban shot Hassan and Farzana. This is seen in the quote "in 1988, [the taliban] massacred the Hazaras in Maza-i-Sharif" ( 213). The killing of Hassan and Farzana impacted their family and friends from the shock and disbelief they went through. Hassan in this situation was held against his life because the Taliban didn't believe he was taking care of the house for a friend.
  • Baba dies

    Sadly, in 1981 Baba passes away. Since he was such a heroic figure to others, many expressed there sadness at his funeral "...helped me build the house in Taimani...''...bless him...''''...found me a job...barely knew him...''...like a brother to me..."'(174) These quotations help us understand how much of an affect Baba had on the peoples lives of Afghanistan. Although Baba had passed the touch he left in these peoples hearts is unconditional.
  • Baba is diagnosed with cancer

    When Baba is diagnosed with cancer he says: "It means it wouldn't change the outcome, just prolong it." (156) He says this because he refuses to receive treatment for it. He thinks this because he does not believe he will be healthy from chemotherapy.
  • Amir and Soraya talk in privacy

    At the flea market Soraya's father works for, Soraya and Amir hold a small conversation including "Would you like to read one of my stories?" (147) This is Amir trying to impress Soraya with his intelligent charm. It is important Soraya's father wasn't present so that they could talk without being interrupted.
  • Amir completes his first book

    As Amir completed his first book, "Six weeks later, a man named Martin Greenwalt called from New York and offered to represent me." (183) This shows all the hard work Amir put into his book finally paid off.This makes Amir feel very content about himself.
  • Last troops of Soviet Union left Aghanistan

    Caused by having peace talks alongside the United Nations, the Soviet Union left the United States. This caused a huge internecine strife in Afghanistan. This can be seen as said in the article: "After Soviet forces departed, Afghanistan descended into vicious internecine strife; by the summer of 1994, power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms. But one group would eventually gain control." (2)
  • Hassan's mother comes back

    In 1990, in hopes of giving back Hassan the love he missed from Sanaubar, she tried "catching up on all the last years" (ch.16). Sanaubar wanted to seek redemption from her son from leaving him all the past years. Her and Hassan spent time together, but it was quite an adjustment for Hassan.
  • The Taliban Takeover

    In 1996, the Taliban had completely taken over Afghanistan which caused many unreasonable new rules that took away peoples rights of freedom. This can be seen in the article as said "Buoyed by Pakistani aid, the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan, imposing strict - enforcement of fundamentalist Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools and into all-enveloping burqa clothing."
  • Amirs call to Pakistan

    Rahim Kahn calls Amir because he wants him to come back to Pakistan because "Rahim Khan is very sick." (191). Rahim Kahn wants Amir to take care of him. This shows the trust Rahim Kahn has for Amir that he wants to stay with him in times of despair.
  • september 11 attacks by Al Queda

    On September 11 2001 Al Queda led terrorist attacks against the United States. This resulted in Al Queda's position being dislodged. As seen in the first page of The New York Times "Afghanistan- An Overview" "The 2001 invasion succeeded in dislodging Al Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, but not in eradicating either group."
  • The Karzai Government

    In 2001, Hamid Karzai was pronounced chairman of the interim government which replaced/defeated the Taliban causing him to lead the country in hopes of making peace for Afghanistan and have an international aid. This can be seen as said "In December 2001, Hamid Karzai, ..., the exiled former king of Afghanistan, was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him the leader of the country. He took office as interim president in June 2002,..." (1)
  • Obamas War

    From 2008-2011, this was a time of decision making and decision breaking of US troops fighting in wars that Barack Obama could prevent. In a speech delivered Dec. 1, 2009, at West Point, Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops. He vowed to start bringing American forces home from Afghanistan in the middle of 2011, saying the United States could not afford and should not have..."(4)
  • Obama making Afghanistan the central military focus

    During Barack Obamas presidency, he made Afghanistan the central military focus of his buisness which took Iraq groups out and vastly increased the number in Afghanistan. This can be seen as said " President Obama made Afghanistan the central military focus of his administration, drawing troops out of Iraq and increasing the number in Afghanistan by almost 50,000."   • US plans on passing responsibility for security to Afghan Gov

    The US planned on having responsibility of security to the Afghan gov. This can be seen when the author states "Though initial plans called for American combat forces to begin withdrawing from Afghanistan in the summer of 2011, the Obama administration increasingly emphasizes the idea that the United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014, when it intends to pass responsibility for security to the Afghan government."   • The great disconnect

    The state of the culture staying where it is or lessening its power and can be seen "But between claims of tactical success on the ground and the strategy of handing off to Afghan forces lies what one colonel called "the great disconnect." The Taliban and the groups it collaborates with remain deeply rooted; the Afghan military and police remain lackluster and given to widespread drug use; ... And the Pakistani frontier remains a Taliban safe haven." (One)
