Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Daoud Khan takes power

    When the King was away his cousin, “As it turned out, they hadn't shot much of anything that night of July 17, 1973. Kabul awoke the next morning to find that the monarchy was a thing of the past. The king, Zahir Shah, was away in Italy. In his absence, his cousin Daoud Khan had ended the king's forty year reign with a bloodless coup.” (36). This was a coup that took place while the king was away. This canged the governmental policy form that of a nonarchy to that of a democracy.
  • The kite fight

    One of the most important events is, “IN THE WINTER OF 1975, I saw Hassan run a kite for the last time. Usually, each neighborhood held its own competition." (55) The kite festival is a very important event because it symbolises Amir’s redemption. The festival also shows how Amir triumphs and eventually drives Hassan away.
  • Hassan and Ali Leave

    Amir’s life is changed when, “I thought of the life I had lived until the winter of 1975 came and changed everything. And made me what I am today.” (2). This was the day that Amir makes it so that Hassan and Ali leave. This would end up shaping his future and the good and bad that he did.
  • Hassan Is Violated

    After the Kite competition Amir, "watched Hassan get raped" (86). This was an important part of the story becuase it offsets the rest of the story. The journey that Amir takes to find Sohrab is due to this scene in the book.
  • Amir Turns Thirteen

    After winning the Kite Competion Baba throws a birthday party becuase ,"I turned thriteen that summer of 1976" (93). When he turned thirteen Amir had a huge party thrown for him. This created a rift between him and hassan becuase Hassan was working as the sevant.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    Afghanistan was a free country until, "1979, when the Soviet Union invaded. Now it is the scene of what has become the central military struggle for the United State" (1).
  • Soviet Paratroops enter Kabul

    Babrak Karmal requested help so, "Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul of DEC. 27, 1979, to assis Babrack Karmal" (2).
  • Amir Graduates

    “THAT SUMMER OF 1983, I graduated from high school at the age of twenty” (131). This allowed Amir to become a writer and would jumpstart his career. The event is so major that Baba throws amir a party.
  • Soviet Airforce is Made Useless

    The USSR's airforce has always played a crucial role in fighting, but, "After 1986, the Soviet Air Force was also rendered largely useless by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missiles supplied by the United States to the rebels." (2).
  • Rahim Khan Goes To look for Hassan

    Rahim Khan went to look for Hassan becuase, "There were a lot of reasons why I went to Hazarajat to find Hassan in 1986." (204). This was so important because it is what led to Hassan's death. His death meant that Amir had to go look for Sohrab.
  • Soviet Forces Withdrawl From Afghanistan

    After peace talks in the United Nations, "Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989" (2).
  • Amir Releases his First Book

    “The novel was released in the summer of that following year, 1989, and the publisher sent me on a five-city book tour” (183). This was his first major success which showed that his education had paid off. This would allow him to pay for his trip back to Afghanistan.
  • Shorawi (Soviets) Withdraw

    “That was the year that the Shorawi completed their withdrawal from Afghanistan” (183). This was important because it allowed the Taliban to take control. This led to Aamir having to go back Afghanistan to get Sohrab.
  • Sohrab is Born

    After failing to give birth to their first child, “In early 1990, Farzana became pregnant again. It was that same year, in the middle of the summer, that a woman covered in a sky blue burka knocked on the front gates one morning.” (209). This is when Sohrab was born and would force Amir to return to Afghanistan. This was great turn of events because if Sohrab was not born then Amir would not have returned to Afghanistan.
  • Afghanistan Decends into Civil War

    After overthrowing the Soviet forces, "Afghanisan descended into cicious internecine strife: by the summer of 1994, power was anarchically divided among competing warlords" (2).
  • Osama Bin Laden arrives in Afghanistan

    When the Tailiban provided a haven to, "Mr. Bin Laden, who arrived by chartered jet" (3).
  • Hassan is Killed

    After Rahim Khan left the taliban, “They told Hassan they would be moving in to supposedly keep it safe until I return. Hassan protested again. So they took him to the street..” (219). After killing Hassan and his wife the Taliban made Sohrab an orphan. When he became an orphan Amir came looking for him.
  • Rahim Khan Calls Amir

    When Rahim Khan called, "One day last summer, my friend Rahim Khan called from Pakistan. He asked me to come see him." (190). This meant that Amir was now going to go back and redeem himself by finding Sohrab. This was such a crucial point in the book becuase it is what the later half of the story is based on.
  • Amir brings Hassan To The US

    Amir took Shorab back to America and, “led him in and he sat on the edge of the bed. The sheets showed brightly colored kites flying in indigo blue skies.” (358). By bringing Shorab to the US Amir made it so that he could heal. The new life would eventually lead to the rehabilitation of Sohrab.
  • Al Queda Attacks the world trade center in New York

    Al Queda based in Afghanistan, "attack on the World Trade Center in New York" (3) provoked the US into intervening.
  • US Puts Karzai In Charge

    After deafeating the taliban the US, "In December 2001, Hamid Zarzai, a supporter and relative of Mohammad Zahir Shah, the exiled former king of Afghanistan, was named chaiman of an interim government that replace the defeated taliban" (3)
  • Amir and Sohrab Win the Kite Competition

    After winning the Kite competition Amir, “I ran. A grown man running with a swarm of screaming children. But I didn't care. I ran with the wind blowing in my face, and a smile as wide as the Valley of Panjsher on my lips.” (371). So after winning Amir runs the kite for Sohrab. This summarizes their relationship beginning anew and them cooperating more.
  • Obama Plans to Deploy 30,000 men

    Obama was angry at the taliban so, "planed to deploy 30,00 additional troops" (4).
  • General McCahystal if removed from duty

    After the general appeared in the rolling stones magazine, "President Obama removed Gen. McChystal" (4).
  • Obama Plans to have all soldiers out of Afghanistan

    Obama planed, "that the US will have forces in the country util at least 2014" (4)
