  • Hassan Is Born

    Hassan was born in a small shack, just outside Amir and Baba's house "in the winter if 1964, just one year after (Amir's) mother died giving birth to (him)." This event is significant because it marks the start of a brotherly bond between Amir and Hassan and a life of lies permitted by Baba.
  • Amir Reads to Hassan

    "One day, in July 1973...(Amir) was reading to (Hassan), and suddenly (he) strayed from the written story," pretending he was reading a story from the book, when he had invented his own altogether. Altough Amir read to Hassan often, this time was the most important because Amir took to heart Hassan's opinions opinions of his writing, and later pursues writing as a career.
  • The Monarchy Falls

    Shots had taken place during the night, but they werent shooting ducks like Ali had told the boys. They did however, "end the king's forty-year reign with a bloodless coup,"and "the monarchy was a thing of the past." Baba, Amir, Ali and Hassan realized things were going to change after this event.
  • Hassan's Present

    We learn here that "Baba never missed Hassan's birthday," and that in 1974, Hassan's present was a "slight Indian fellow who looked like a matematics teacher," who was hired to remove his hare lip.
  • Soviet Troops Invade Kabul

    Just a short while ago, "Afghanistan was a stable, relatively prosporus," country. Certain evidence reveals how the "turmoil and extremism" the country has undergone began with Soviet Troops invading. Soviet troops stayed in the country for 9 years, and it cost them major damage.
  • Baba and Amir's Escape

    Amir and Baba leave Kabul in a covered truck filled with people. They were driven out by "a people smuggler-- it was a pretty lucrative business then, driving people out of Shorawi-occupied Kabul to the relative safety of Pakistan."
  • Amir's First Book

    At this time, Amir "finished (his) first novel, a father-son story set in Kabul, written mostly with the typewriter the general had given to (him)." These actions show Amir values family, because he writes on a topic much like his own life with his father, and he writes it out on a typewriter given to him by his father in-law.
  • Soviet Troops Leave Afghanistan

    "Eventually, after peace talks moderated by the United Nations, the last soviet troops left Afghanistan," leaving behind a country filled with Islamic extremists who formed Al Qaeda with Osama bin Laden as their leader.
  • The Taliban Numbers Rise

    The Taliban group was very popular and "by the end of 1994 Mullah had nearly 12,000 followers" who were promised the restoration of Islam to daily life.
  • The Taliban Takes Over Afghanistan

    With assistance from Pakistan, such as providing weapons, money and supplies, "the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan, imposing strict enforcement of Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools and into al-enveloping burqa clothing."
  • Taliban Welcomes bin Laden

    The Taliban also supported the Al Qaeda when they "provided a haven for Mr. bin Laden, h=who arrived by chartered jet..."
  • Rahim Khan's Phone Call

    Rahim Khan calls Amir with some bad news: he's sick and dying. '"We used to be close. He was the first grown-up I ever thought of as a friend," he says bringing up memories of his life in Kabul.
  • The 9/11 Attack on the World Trade Center

    Al Qaeda and Taliban forces "attack the the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001.
  • Hamid Karzai Given Government Position

    A supporter of the exiled king, Hamid Karzai, "was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban."
  • Taliban Removed From Major Cities

    When the Taliban refused to hand over bin Laden after the 9/11 attack, "the U.S. joined forces with rebel groups that had never accepted Taliban rule," to drive out the Taliban.
  • Kite Running in America

    At this point in time, we find Sohrab and Amir have restored themselves a little by kite flying and kite running. Amir remembers Hassan as he used to be,"the hands holding the spool were the chipped-nailed calloused hands of a harelipped boy." After they defeated a kite, Amir ran after it, whispering to Sohrab "For you, a thousand times over.
  • Karzai Elected as President

    Hoping to restore peace to the country, "Mr. Karki was elected to a five-year term as president" of Afghanistan
  • U.S. Troops Deployed

    In a speech," Mr Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops" into Afghan territories.
