Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Kite Race

    Amir screamed excitedly "We won! We won! that's all i could say"(66). Amir and Hassan win the kite race and Amir finally feels like he has proven himself to Baba.
  • Amir's birthday party

    Amir opens his present from Rahim and sees that "It was a brown leather-bound notebook. I traced my fingers along the gold-colored stitching"(99). Rahim tells him that the notebook is for him to write all his stories in.
  • Amir's introduction

    Amir states that "When we were children, Hassan and I used to climb the poplar trees in the driveway of my father's house and annoy our neighbors by reflecting sunlight into their homes with a shard of mirror"(3). Amir is sharing his story of what him and Hassan use to do when they were younger.
  • Rape scene

    Amir frantically says "I have one last chance to make a decision. One final oppurtunity to decide who i was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan-the way he'd stood up for me all those times in the past-and acceot whatever would happen to me. Or i could run. In the end, i ran"(77). Amir witnesses Hassan being rape by Assef and doesn;t do anything to stop it. He failed to save Hassan which causes him to feel guilt for a long period of time.
  • Amir turns thirteen

    Amir talks about how he "turned thirteen the summer of 1976, Afghanistan's next to last summer of peace and anonymity"(93). During this time, Amir and Baba seem to drift, but Amir still manages to stick by Baba's side and contain the power from being Baba's son.
  • Soviet Troops Parichuted into Kabul

    According to the New York Times, "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec, 27, 1979, to assit Barak Karmel, who had become president in a coup within the Afghan Communist leadership"(2).
  • Baba almost gets shot

    Amir was frightend when "the whirlwind of half thoughts spinning in my head came to a halt when i cracked my eyelids, found Baba still standing"(116). It turns out the Russian Officer had holstered his weapon. It was a miracle Baba has survieved.
  • Graduation

    Amir finally "graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day"(131). Amir finally finishes high school, and is off to start a new life on his own.
  • Move to America

    Baba and Amir move to America and "He had been working at a gas station in Fremont and had the day off"(127). When they move to America, Baba downgrades to working at a gas station.
  • Baba sells the car

    "The following summer, the summer of 1984-the summer i turne twenty one- idated '71 Volkswagen bus for $550 from an old Afghan acquaintance who'd been a high-school science teacher in Kabul"(137). Baba sells the car because he does't make much money from working at the gas station.
  • Soviet Air Force rendered largly

    Back then, "After 1986, the Soviet Air Force was also rendered largely useless by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missiles supplied by the united States to the rebels"(New York Times pg 2).
  • The marriage

    For the wedding, "Baba spent $35,000, nearly the balance of his lfe savings, on the awrossi, the wedding ceremony"(169). Baba wanted to be able to see the wedding before his pass, so they changed the date to make it sooner. Baba also spent a lot of money on the wedding because it was going to be one of the last things hes going to see Amir do.
  • Baba's Death

    Amir had come to realize, "Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; I'd have to find it on my own"(174). After Baba's pass, Amir realized how terrified he is that he doesn't have someone to look up to anymore. He has to use his own morals.
  • Last Soviet Troops left Afghanistan

    Eventually, "(t)he last Sovient troops left Afghanistan in FEbuary 1989, in what was in effect a unilateral withdraw"( New York Times pg 2).
  • Sohrab is born

    "It was Sanuabar who delivered Hassan's son that winter of 1990"(211). Sohrab is finally born into the world.
  • Mullah Omar

    According to the New York Times "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up thye warloads to the noth and east"(2).
  • United States Invasion

    The US military had been invlovled "(w)hen it led an invasion after the Sept, 11 attacks by Al Quada"(New YOrk Times pg 1).
  • World War Trade Center

    According to the New York Times, "After the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11 2001, President George W. Bush gave the Tailban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden"(3).
  • Sohrab attempts to comit suicide

    Amir says "He didnt charge me for the three days i'd spent at the hospital"(351). If it wasn't for Amir, Sohrab would have died in that bath tub. Amir had redeemed his sins by caring for Sohrab and not giving up on him when he attempted to comit suicide.
