Amir describes the car ride away from Afghanistan saying, "My innards had been roiling since we'd left Kabul just after two in the morning. Baba never said so, but I knew he saw my car sickness as yet another of my array of weakness." (110) Baba does not directly reveal his disappointment in Amir, but Amir knows Baba's true feelings toward him. All of Amir's insecurities have arisen through Baba's parenting.
  • Amir graduates from high school

After Amir graduates, Baba says, "I am moftakhir, Amir," he said. Proud. His eyes gleamed when he said that and I liked being on the receiving end of that look." • Amir meets Soraya

When Amir first sees Soraya, he describes her saying, "She had thick black eyebrows that touched in the middle like the arched wings of a flying bird, and the gracefully hooked nose of a princess from old Persia." Amir does not know it yet, but the woman he met that day would change his life forever.
  • Amir gets married

Before Amir is married, Soraya admits that she is not a virgin. Amir then says, "There were many ways in which Soraya Taheri was a better person than me. Courage was just one of them." He has comitted to something as big as marriage, but he is not able to share his deepest secret with his bride.
  • Baba dies

Amir reflects on Baba's death thinking, "My whole life, I had been "Baba's son." Now he was gone. Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; I'd have to find it on my own. The thought of it terrified me." (174) Amir has always looked up to Baba in every aspect of life. When Baba dies, Amir has no one else follow, for the first time in his life he has to create his own path.

(213) Amir does not truly realize how much Afghanistan has changed for the worse. From America the news of death and destruction in Afghanistan does not seem to hit very hard, but in Pakistan the fear is real.
  • Amir fights Assef

As Amir is getting beat up he thinks to himself, "I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some hidden nook in a corner of my mind, I'd even been looking forward to this." • Amir goes to Afghanistan

A week before Amir travels to Afghanistan he pictures, "Hassan running in the snow, the hem of his green chapan dragging behind him, snow crunching under his black rubber boots. Finally, Amir decides to help his friend even though he is risking his own health.
