  • Hassan was born

    In the mud hut Ali lived "Hassan was born in the winter of 1964, just one year after [Amir's] mother gave birth to [him]"(6). Hassan is Ali and Sanaubar's son, who are Baba's Hazaras. Amir was born before hassan, in 1963 to Baba and Sofia Akrami.
  • Amir's first attack

    Describing what had happened, Amir said "The earth shook a little and we heard the rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire" (35). The Russians had began attacking kabul. Amir was young and frightened by the noise at the time.
  • The kite tournament

    The competition was held in Amir's neighborhood "In the winter of 1975, I saw Hasan run a kite for the last time." (55). This was the event that the entire book really revolved around. This is the winter Hassan was raped and Amir was scared for life.
  • Ali and Hassan leave.

    In an emotional conversation Ali decides that he and Hassan "can't live here anymore"(106). They decided to leave because of differences between the two families. This makes bab very upset and he begs them to stay.
  • Soviet Union invades

    The New York Times Article explains, "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979" (New York Times 2) The soviet union is beginning to invade Kabul to the president of the Afghan communist leadership.
  • Baba and Amir leave for Pakistan

    Amir was confused sitting in a truck when he heard "Baba and Karim discussing the arrangements in Jalalabad"(113). The had to leave kabul because of the dangers of Afghanistan. The two were smuggled out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan.
  • Amir and Baba are in San Fransisco

    Amir and baba are living in the US and Baba "loved the idea of America" (125). They are excited about living in America because it is a safe place. They reside in the Bay Area and Amir goes to high school.
  • Amir graduates high school

    Amir graduated "at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day" (131). After graduation Bab tell Amir how proud he is of him. Then, Amir is given a car and decides to enroll in junior college.
  • Amir meets Soraya

    After being introduced to general Taheri and his family, Amir seems to be in love with "Soraya Taheri. [His] swap meet princess"(142). Amir greatley respected the general and his wife, but liked their daughter even more. He continued to admire her for quite some time afterwards.
  • Baba is diagnosed with cancer

    Amir took his father to the doctor and baba asked if he had "cancer" (154). Baba had denied treatment because his condition was uncurable. He asked Amir to keep his health secret.
  • Amir and Soraya are married

    After the Taheri's accepted Amir's proposal "Baba spent $35,000, nearly the balance of his life savings, on the awrousi, the wedding ceremony" (169). Soraya and Amir wanted to get married quickly so that Baba was alive to attend thier wedding. The two are happily married throughout the course of the book.
  • Amir finished his first novel

    Amir wanted to become a writer, so he wrote " a father-son story set in Kabul"(182). He sent his story to agencies and eventually got published. The story sounds like Baba had some influence on the subject.
  • Soviet Union leaves Afghanistan

    After talk of peace, "the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989" (NTY 2). After they left, The country was devasted by the war, leaving a struggle for power and leadership.
  • Sohrab is born

    After revealing that Hassan's mother returned to him it was fitting that "it was Sanaubar who delivered Hassan's son the winter of 1990" (211). Sohrab is the son of Hassan and his wife Farzana. This child is the real reason Rahim Kahn wanted Amir to go to Kabul.
  • Taliban begins to takeover

    The article says, "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers, and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east." (NYT 2) The taliban begins eizing the control of the other warlords.
  • Taliban provide haven for Osama bin Laden

    New York times said that the taliban, "provided a haven for Mr. bin Laden, who arrived by chartered jet at Jalalabad Airport in May 1996" (NTY 3) The taliban try to protect Mr. bin Laden
  • Amir brings Sohrab home to America

    When landing in California, Soraya introduces herself "Salaam, Sohrab jan, I'm your Khala Soraya" (358). Amir brought Sohrab home to America so he can be safe. Soraya is touched to meet her nephew whom she will take into her home.
  • Attack on world trade center

    Because of the "attack on the World Trade center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, President George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over mr. bin Laden" (NYT 3) 9/11 caused the US to be on defense and search for those guilty for the tragedy.
  • Taliban defeated

    When describing the Talibans come back, NYT says "despite theirdefeat in 2001" (NYT 3) The taliban faced a loss in 2001
  • Rahim Kahn contacts Amir

    He gets a phone call and is told "Rahim Kahn is very sick"(191). Rahim Kahn called Amir and told him he was sick. Amir must then go to Pakistan to meet with him.
  • Sohrab's smile

    Amir had flewn kites and looked over at Sohrab to see that "one corner of his mouth had curled up just so. A smile"(370). After a long time of quiet sadness, Sohrab finally expresses happiness. This small smile is enough to give Amir hope that everything would be okay.
  • Mr. Karzai elected president

    After the Taliban was defeated in afghanistan " Mr Karzai was elected to a five year term as president in 2004" (NYT 3) The Afghan government seemed to be making a comeback
  • General Petraeus takes charge of military operations in middle east

    The highly recognized general "had taken charge of the United States Central Command in October 2008, with responsibility for military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and across the region." (NYT 4) There was a new general in charge of US affairs with the middle east.
  • Obama announces plans to deploy 30,00 troops

    When giving a speech " Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops." (NYT 4) Barack Obama wanted to start to bring troops home from war.
  • Predicted time for war in Afganistan to come to an end

    Obama wanted to " emphasize the idea that the United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014." (NYT 4) The president expected to have troops continuing their work until recently.
