  • The Kite Runner... Amir's First Words

    Amir's first word was "Baba" (Hosseini, 11). This shows he valued Baba more than anyone, which does make sense since he is Amir's father. Although, Hassan and Amir were pretty close, but this symbolizes that their friendship will not go far considering one values the other more.
  • The Kite Runner... Hassan is Born, Starting the Special Bond with Amir

    In the very beginning of the novel, "Hassan was born in the winter of 1964" (Hosseini, 6). When Hassan is born, this begins the special, yet temporary friendship of Amir and Hassan. Since they are so close in age, they are able to get along well for the time being. However, Hassan is Amir's slave which creates difficulties in the friendship.

    When Hassan spoke his first words, the word that came out was "Amir" (Hosseini, 11). This shows that Hassan values Amir because your first words symbolize what or who is held dearest in your heart. However, Amir does not value Hassan as much considering his first word was somebody else.
  • The Kite Runner... Baba Builds an Orphanage

    When Amir was still really young, "Baba decided to build an orphanage," (Hosseini, 13). After this, Baba was shown even more respect than people previously gave. However, this may have put some pressure on Amir because he has such high expectations to live up to.
  • The Kite Runner... Hassan's Rape by Assef

    In chapter 7, Assef said, "because today, it's only going to cost you that blue kite," (Hosseini, 72), but Hassan wouldn't ever think of giving anyone Amir's kite. Amir loved that kite because he felt it brought him closer to Baba, so Hassan would not give up the kite to Assef and upset Amir. Because of Hassan's loyalty to Amir, Assef punished Hassan because he didn't receive the winning kite.

    Amir mentioned when he move to America that "For me, America was a place to bury my memories. For Baba, a place to mourn his" (Hosseini, 129). This quote demonstrates how Baba puts Amir's need/desires before his because of the endless amount of love for his son. Even if Baba misses Kabul, he wants more than anything to see Amir happy and living his life to the fullest.
  • The Kite Runner... Amir's Journey to Hazarajat to Search For Hassan

    While talking about his search for Hassan, Amir said, "There were a lot of reasons why I went to Hazarajat to find Hassan in 1986. The biggest one... was that I was lonely." Amir obviously missed Hassan and their memories they shared together. Amir noticed that he would always feel at home and accepted by Hassan due to their brotherhood they formed throughout their childhood together.

  • The Kite Runner... Amir Publishes his First Novel

    Amir mentions that "The novel was published the following year, 1989" (Hosseini, 183). This would have made Baba very proud, especially because his stories with Baba were incorporated into the novel. Also, Amir has always loved to write stories and tell them to Hassan, so by publishing his book, he is living out his dream occupation.

After arriving in Pakistan he visits his old friend and supportive figure in his life, Rahim Khan. He learned everything that has happened in Afghanistan since he moved to America, and was completely astonished at how much had changed.

    In 2001, "Soraya picked up Amir and Sohrab at the airport" (Hosseini, 357). Saharan was definitely not excited for life in America, especially when he found out he would have to live in another orphanage for 2 years. However, he was now safe and protected from harm that Assef could cause.
