Kite Runner and the History of Afghanistan

  • Hassan's Birthday

On Hassan's birthday his reaction to his birthday gist was: "Oh. Hassan said. He looked from Dr. Kumar to Baba to Ali. His hand touched his upper lip. Oh, he said again " (46). Amir treated Hassan like a friend/servant and he was jealous that Hassan was getting such a great gift for his birthday compared to his usual gifts. Amir's thoughts about Hassan and whether he is actually loyal shows that he is jealous because he thinks that he is perfect. Not knowing that Hassan is Amir's half brother
  • Amir and Hassan Encounter Assef

When Amir and Hassan run into Assef he thinks (about Hassan): " But he's not my friend! I almost blurted. He's my servant! Had I really thought that? Of course I hadn't... I treated Hassan well, just like a friend... Better even, more like a brother" (41). Amir's realization of this shows his jeolous characteristic. Baba always seems to treat them equally which frustrates Amir because he feels that because he is Baba's son he should have more attention.
  • Kite Fighting

  • Amir's Relief

Amir realizes, "[s]ince the winter of 1975, I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that... I'd been looking forward to this" (289). This is the moment when Amir confronts Assef after all of those years cowering behind Hassan. However, now that Hassan is gone he has no one to protect him. He feels at peace because he feels like he is finally paying for his sins and everything will be alright.
  • Amir's Birthday

When Amir turns thirteen Rahim Khan gives him a " brown leather -bound notebook... 'For your stories,' he said" (100). When Rahim gives Amir this notebook, it symbolizes their friendship and Rahim's devotion towards Amir (and his future). Rahim want to show him that he is there for Amir and that he wants him to succeed.
  • Psychotic Breakdown

  • Soviet troops

on December 27, 1979, "the first doviet troops [arachuted into kabul... to asist babrak karmal who had become president in a coup within the afghan communist leadership." (The soviet invasion and after)

  • Amir and Baba going to Pakistan

As Amir and Baba are heading to Pakistan, Baba gets into a fight and this happens: "Less than two hours ago, Baba had volunteered to take a bullet for thr honor of a womanhe didn't even know. Now He'd almost choked a man to death..." (10, 118) This quote demonstrates Baba's traits and how he reacts to certain situations. Although Baba can be happy and cheery at moments, he can be volatile when it comes to situations he feels strongly about.
  • The Incident

Amir and Baba are in a small grocery stor when Amir witnesses this: "I heard screaming and glass breaking... on the floor: Oranges, an overturned magazine rack, a broken jar of beef jerky, and shards of glass at Baba's feet" (127). In Afghanistan, Baba was well-known because it was a small place, however in America no one knows him. This make's Baba go bonkers because he feel neglected and rejected from society. This shows a huge shirt of power from Baba to Amir.
  • Amir Graduates

Amir is releaved when this happens: "I graduated from high school at the age of twenty... He walked to me, curled his arm around my neck..." Then Baba says, "I am moftakhir, Amire he said, proud" (131). For once, Amir feels like he did the right thing to make his father proud. His whole life he has been striving for his fathers aproval and acceptance, and he feels that he proved himself.
  • Food Stamps

Whne Baba and Amir were getting free food stamps, "Baba dropped the stack f food stamps on her dest, Thank you but I don't want... I work always, In Afghanistan I work. In America, I work... But I don't like free money" (130". This revea;s a huge trait about Baba. Even though he knows that he needs money to support him and his family he still denies the food stamps. Baba's act shows that he has the gumption to continue to succeed even though he has no one to impress (well maybe Amir)
  • Sohrab's Surrender

As the book comes to a close, Amir offers his home to Sohrab:
"Sohrab never accepted my offer. Nor did he decline it... So wht I took as a yes from him was in actuality more of a quiet surrender..." (356) After Sohrab had hurt himself his whole demeanor changed and he became even more depressed. Amir offered his house with kindness but Sohrab was so broken that he couldn't even make a decision. Additionally, Amir does this to make up for his sins because he feels like it is his responsibility.
  • Re-encounter with Assef

  • Amir's Success

Amir has been working really hard on his new book and he says, "I finished my first novel... I opened our mailbox and found a request from a New York agency for the completed manuscript" (182).
Amir shows Baba that he can succeed without him helping and doesn't need his support anymore because he is a grown man. In the beginning, Baba patronized Amir for wanting to be an author, however this leads to him wanting to prove himself after all of the neglect he has gotten in the past from Baba.
