  • Baba is born

    Baba, the father of Amir, was born, "In 1933", (pg.24). Baba being born is important because he is the father of Amir and he affects Amirs life in thousands of ways.
  • Amir is born

    The main character Amir was "At the age of twelve on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975." (pg.1). This event is very important to the story because without him there would be no story.
  • hassan is born

    Amir claims that Hassan's mother "gave birth to him one cold day winter day in 1964", (pg.6). Hassan being born is extremely important to the story and helps Amir grow so much as a person throughout the whole story.
  • hassan is violated

    While Assef is violating Hassa Amir "bit {his} my fast. Shut {his} eyes.", (pg.73). Ever since this event Amir felt he was in debt and owed Hassan because he witnessed the rape and didn't do anything about it. His guilt caused some really important events later in the story.
  • soviets invade

    On December 27, 1979 soviets,"parachuted into Kabul", (The New York Times).
  • Start to flee Afghanistan

    Amir and Baba were in the truck leaving Kabul, Amir says they,"Left kabul just after two in the morning,", (pg.110). This plays a huge part in the setting of the story because at this time the soviets had just invade the middle east and Afghanistan in particular.
  • Living in california

    At the start of chapter 11 Amir claims,"Baba loved the idea of America. it was living in America that gave him an ulcer,",(pg.125). From Afghanistan to California they went from riches to rags which was difficult because for the first time ever they had to work to keep a roof over their heads.

  • Amir gets married

    When Amir was getting married he said, "I'm so happy I don't know what to say," (pg.165). This moment was really important to Amir and was one of the happiest days of his life.
  • soviets leave afhanistan

    After the united nations negotiated for peace,"the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989,",(New York Times,page 2).
  • fight for power

    In the summer of 1994, because the last Soviets had just left, the fight for power resulted to be,"divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms,", (New York Times,page 2).
  • Mullah Omar starts to gain power

    Before the end of 1994, Mullah Omar gained,"nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north east.", (New York Times,page 2).
  • Taliban take over

    The taliban took control of Afghanistan in 1996 and created,"strict enforcement of fundementalist Islamic law,", (New York Times,page 3).
  • Rahim khan's dying wish

    Amir recieves a call from his old friend, Rahim Khan, and was given a mission to fulfill Rahim Khan's dying wish of bringing Sohrab home. Amir tells Soraya,"I have to go to Pakistan" and explains how Rahim Khan got sick. She wishes him good luck on his voyage.
  • U.S. joins forces against taliban

    On September 11, 2001, President Bush requested the taliban hand over Bin-Laden but when they refused,"the United States joined forces with rebel groups that had never accepted taliban rule,", (New York Times,page 3).
  • Amir finds out about Hassans death

    Rahim khan was telling Amir what happened, he said,"Hassan protested again. So they took him to the street-", (pg.219). This is obligated because now he feels obligated to get Sohrab back to America.
  • Amir stays with Farid

    When Maryam serves them dinner Wahid tells Amir,"I'm sorry we can't offer you meat...Only the Taliban can afford meat now.", (pg.238). This gives Amir a picture of what its like in Afghan now and how the ethics of the whole place has changed to only benefit the taliban.
  • A run in with Assef

    When Amir is taking a trip down memory lane in Kabul he runs into Assef and finds himself hospitalized from a fight with him. Amir says, "I don't know if I gave Assef a good fight. I don't think I did.", (pg.288). This is Amirs first run-in with the Taliban and he learns first hand how brutal the Taliban can be.
  • Sohrab the savior

    In an act of self-defense while being attacked by Assef Sohrab uses a slingshot, he points it at Assef,"the slingshot made a thwiiiiit when Sohrab released the cup.", (pg.291). This probably save Amirs life from being beaten to death so this is very important to his life.
  • Sohrab tries to commit suicide

    Amir walks into the bathroom to give Sohrab good news about the move to America and see's him soaking in blood and unconcious in the bathtub. Amir saw him fell to his knees and started,"Screaming through [his] clenched teeth.", (pg.343). This is important because it shows how much Sohrab has been through and he Feels done with life.
  • 2004 president

    Hamid Karzai was seeking peace for Afghanistan and he was, "elected to a five-year term as president.", (New York Times,page 3).
  • Flying kites with Sohrab

    Amir brings Sohrab back to America after he recovers from his suicide attempt and Sohrab refuses to talk for a long while. A year later Amir takes him to fly kites,"[he] looked down at Sohrab. one corner of his mouth curled up so.", (pg.371). This shows sohrab may be finally adjusting a little now and is happy flying the kite.
  • Obama deployes troops

    In 2009 Obama states a plan,"to deploy 30,000 additional troops,", (New York Times,page 3).
  • Forces in Afghan until 2014

    In 2011 the Obama administration said,"the United States will have forces in the country until at leas the end of 2014.", (New York Times,page 3).
