Period: 500 to Dec 25, 700 The state of Chenla is replace by Funan as the dominant kingdom Jul 15, 802 The establishment of the Khmer Empire and King Jayavarman II declares himself as a devaraja Dec 24, 1122 The construction of the Hindu temple Angkor Wat begins Period: Dec 24, 1177 to Dec 25, 1180 The capital Angkor is looted by the Chams who then further invade into the eastern territory of the Empire Period: Dec 24, 1181 to Dec 25, 1219 King Jayavarman VII defeats Chams and expands the territory to Thailand, Laos and Burma. He is known as the most powerful of all Khmer Kings Period: Dec 24, 1243 to Dec 25, 1298 Jayavarman VIII denounces Buddhism ordering the temples to be destroyed and creating Hinduism as the main religion of the empire.
