  • The railroad

    The Transcontinental Railroad was started in 1862 and had to be run from the Mississippi River to California. In order to cut down on time the Central Pacific Railroad which consisted mostly of Chinese immigrants started at Sacramento and moved eastward. The Union Pacific Railroad which consisted mostly of Irish immrigrants started in Omaha and moved westward.
  • The Franco-Prussian War

    A few Ger. states led by Prussia defeated France in the Franco-Prussian war. Many thought that the french would come out with a victory but the few germans defated the french power. The Franco-Prussian War ushered in a new era in warfare. Breachloading Prussian Dreyse Needle-guns and French Chassepots took the place of the out of date and uneffective older muzzle-loading rifles. The French side lost 140000 while the germans only lost 100000 the winning of this war created a unified Germany.

    Sioux chief Sitting Bull leads the last of his fugitive people in surrender to United States troops at Fort Buford in Montana. This is important because it is part of many native americans giving up the last of their resistance.

    The electric light, one of the everyday conveniences that most affects our lives, was invented in 1879 by Thomas Alva Edison. He was neither the first nor the only person trying to invent an incandescent light bulb.

    Buffalo hunting became very popular during this time. It's fur and hide leather made clothing and accessories. And with the wipe out of the Buffalo, the Indians were forced to grow their food and make room for American settlers.

    US sent a battleship Maine to anchor in Havana Harbor, for 3 weeks, then on February 15, 1898, an enormous explosion shattered the Maine. American newspapers immediately blamed Spain. Later it seems the explosion may have been accidental.
  • Teddy Roosevelt

    After President McKinley's assassination, Teddy Roosevelt became the new and youngest president. He and his vice presedient hold office for 4 terms even though the constitustion says a president is only alowed two terms.

    The first plans for a canal were drawn up in 1539 by King Charles V of Spain, but the first edvances twards building it were made more than 300 years later! These advances however were in the Panama railway. Later, in 1999, all responsibility for the Canal was transferred to the government of Panama.

    The Panama Canal officially opened on this date but the actual construction began on May 4, 1904. The canal provided means of ship travel from one side of the USA to the other as opposed to sailing all the way around the tip of South America.
