    Secession of the South

    After the election of Lincoln, many states seceded from the Union. South Carolina was the first to secede, followed by Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Later, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina ,and Virginia eventually seceded after the fall of Fort Sumter.
