  • The Reflex Arc Concept in Psychology

    John Dewey gives a reconstruction of the reflex arc concept. this forms the starting point of transactional paradigm or functionalism in psychology. The "Reflex Arc" was thought to explain human behavior by body-mind. Dewey expresses the opinion "the principles of explanation and classification which the reflex arc idea has replaced are not sufficiently displaced"(Dewey 1894). Deweys beliefs were that the dualism was part of the central nervous system and not the soul.
