He was born into Spanish nobility. It was known that he served as a page which was also known as an attendant to the royal ruler.

In 1490 Ponce served as a Page for Don Pedro Nunuz de Guzman, a Spanish knight. He fought as part of their army and help fight the Muslims.

Ponce then stayed back at Santo Domingo,Hispaniola while Columbus sailed back to Spain.

In 1502 Ponce was given the task to defeat the rebellions in Hispaniola called the Tainos. After he did he was then appointed Frontier Governor of a city called Higuey.

In 1508 Ponce heard of stories about gold being on an island called Boriquen Island. He got permission from the King to go on a voyage and explore.

Most sources have found that Ponce assisted Columbus on the 2nd voyage West.
