    Queen Elizabeth I of England chose Walter Raleigh to set up a colony in North America.

  • The Virginia Co.

    In the early 1600s the Virginia Co. was set up.

  • The settlement

    3 ships sent by the Virginia Co. sailed into what is now Chesapeake bay. 105 Colonists aboard, sailed up a river that they named the James after their king. Along the shore they built the settlement of Jamestown. More than half of them died the first year.

  • The House of Burgesses

    Virginia's legislature called the House of Burgesses met to create laws.

  • Africans helped Virginia prosper

    The first Africans were brought to Jamestown to work.

  • The Powhatans fight back

    The Native Americans, tired of more and more of their land being taken over, begin to fight back, beginning years of fighting.

  • Royal Colony

    King James I makes Virginia a royal colony, which means that he owns it.
