    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 was proposed by Henry Clay and was to help both the North and the South. California would be admitted to the Union as a Free State and for the South, the compromise proposed a new and effective fugitive slave law. Utah and New Mexico territories would question slavery and would allow it to be determined by popular sovereignty. The compromise helped resolve the Texas-Mexico boundary dispute and making Texas pay 10 million dollars to the Federal Government.

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    The Fugitive Slave Act was declared right about the time the Compromise of 1850 was proposed. Slaves were not allowed to have a a trial by jury. Slaves were also not allowed to testify on their own behalf. Under the Fugitive Slave Act, anyone helping or harboring an escaped slave, would be fined and jailed.
