    The UN confirms that any and all human rights that are protected offline must also be protected online.
  • Pokemon Go Drops

    An app that reached out to the Pokemon fans allowed them to go around their cities and neighborhoods and 'catch' Pokemon. This app had people of all ages running around their communities 'catching' Pokemon and for about 2 weeks it was all that social media users talked about.
  • Fyre Festival

    The Fyre Festival was a fake music festival created by Billy Mcfarland, the CEO of Fyre Media. It was supposed to be on the island of Great Exuma. It was promoted on Instagram by big celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. It was advertised that attendees of the festival who paid hundred of dollars for tickets were going to be staying in luxury villas and have gourmet meals but they ended up getting prepacked sandwiches and tents to sleep in.
  • WannaCry ransomware attacks

    WannaCry is a ransomware cryptoworm that demanded cryptocurrency like Bitcoin from users of older Microsoft Windows systems. Was resolved by big businesses advising Internet users not to give cryptocurrency away and Microsoft releasing patches for their older programs. This shows how the internet opens the door for a lot of unwanted viruses and bugs and how those can affect the everyday user of the Internet.
  • Yanny vs Laurel debate

    A Twitter poll of an auditory illusion was posted and went viral. Everyone was debating on whether the video was saying "Yanny" or "Laurel" and which was the correct word in the video. the illusion was done by adding high-pitched frequencies to the video of someone saying "Laurel." It was determined that by seeing both of the words in the poll your brain subconsciously chose which frequency to listen to, thus affecting which word you heard.

    The video-sharing app 'TIkTok' reached over 1 billion global downloads making the app one of the most downloaded apps ever.

    An account Instagram was created called @world_record_egg for the sole purpose of getting a photo of an egg to be the most liked picture on Instagram after it was announced that Kylie Jenner was the current world record holder at 18 million likes. The picture spread around the Internet like wildfire and on every app, there were advocates saying "Go like this picture!!" It took less than 10 days to have the picture of the egg surpass the world record and now the photo has over 50 million likes.

    Black Lives Matter

    BlackLivesMatter reached a peak in 2020. Protests started because George Floyd was a victim of police brutality and was killed after being pulled over by the police. In this timespan, protests about many members of the black community that were victims of police brutality were organized and promoted on all social media platforms. For the first time, video evidence of protests was widely shared across all platforms. This proved the peaceful nature of protests and who instigated violence there.
