Industrial Revolution

  • Blast Furnace

    Blast Furnace
Created by Abraham Darby. Developed the coke burning blast furnace that made it possible to produce commercial grade iron cost-effectively.
  • Atmospheric Engine

    Atmospheric Engine
Created by Thomas Newcomen. The Atmospheric Engine was the first practical fuel burning engine. The engine was operated by condensing steam drawn into the cylinder, thereby creating a partial vacuum which allowed the atmospheric pressure to push the piston into the cylinder.
  • Flying Shuttle

Created by John Kay. The shuttle was thrown, or passed, through the threads by hand, and wide fabrics required two weavers seated side by side passing the shuttle between them.
  • Spinning Jenny

    Spinning Jenny
Created by James Hargreaves. The spinning jenny was a machine that greatly speeded up the production of cotton by simultaneously spinning eight threads.
  • Watt Steam Engine

Created by James Watt. The Watt steam engine improved the efficiency of steam engines considerably. His engines could be smaller and use less coal.
  • Spinning Mules

    Spinning Mules
Created by Robert Owen. The spinning mule is a machine used to spin cotton and other fibres. Mules were worked in pairs by a minder, with the help of two boys: the little piecer and the big or side piecer.
  • Wool Combing Machine

Created by Edmund Cartwright. This machine was used to arrange and lay parallel by length the fibers of wool, prior to further treatment. The machine was important in the mechanization of the textile industry.
  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
Created by Eli Whitney. The cotton gin was a machine that quickly and easily separated cotton fibers from their seeds, enabling much greater productivity than manual cotton separation.
  • Electrical Battery

    Electrical Battery
Created by Alessandro Volta. He discovered that electricity could be generated chemically and made to flow evenly through a conductor in a closed circuit.
  • Steamboat

    Steamboat
Created by Robert Fulton. The success of his steamboat changed river traffic and trade on major American rivers. The steamboat was propelled by a steam engine, especially a paddle-wheel craft of a type used widely on rivers.
  • Steam Locomotive

Created by George Stephenson. A steam locomotive is a type of railway locomotive that produces its pulling power through a steam engine. These locomotives are fueled by burning usually coal, wood, or oil to produce steam in a boiler.
  • Sewing Machine

Created by Elias Howe. The sewing machine was used for making blankets ,and clothing. It made sewing much easier, and faster. It used to be done by hand.
