    Freedom Rides 12 Feb - 26 Feb 1965
    The Freedom Rides aimed to bring attention to the poor state of Aboriginal peopled health, education and housing, In the country towns of New South Wales is where they travelled (pictured). They hoped to point out and help to minimize the social discriminatory barriers which existed between Aboriginal and white residents. They also wished to encourage and support Aboriginal people themselves to resist discrimination.
  • Wave Hill Walk off

    Wave Hill Walk off
    On August 23rd, Vincent Lingiari (pictured) lead a group of 200 Aboriginal cattle workers and their families away from Wave Hill to protest about the unfair work conditions and poor pay.

    The 1967 Referendum proposed to include Aboriginal people in the census and to allow the Commonwealth government to make laws for Aboriginal people.
  • Aboriginal Tent Embassy

    Aboriginal Tent Embassy
    On Australia Day in 1972, four Aboriginal men stood infort of Parliment house with a sign saying Aboriginal Embassy and over a few months, the suppoters grew to over 2000. the police violently destroyed what was know to be the Aboriginal Tent Embassy (pictured), and TV crews captured the violence and the public expressed their outrage at the way the Aboriginals were being treated,

    Land Returned to Gurindji People
    The Whitlam Goverment in 1975, negociated with the Vesteys to give the Gurindji people back a part of their land. This took place on 16 August 1975 at Kalkaringi. In the photo you can see Gough Whitlam pouring sand into Vincent Lingiari's hand,
  • Mabo Case Ruling the High Court

    Mabo Case Ruling the High Court
    A land rights conference was held at James Cook University and Eddie Mabo (pictured) made a speech to the audience where he explained the land inheritance system on Murray Island. The importance of this in terms of Australian common law doctrine was taken note of by one of the attendees, a lawyer, who suggested there should be a test case to claim land rights through the court system.

    The report is a tribute to the strength and hardships of many of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by forcible removal of children. It shows the struggles they went through and the sacrifices they made.
