  • First School for Deaf

    In 1817 the first American residential school for students who were deaf opened
  • First School for the Blind

    In 1829 Samuel Howe opened the first residential school for students who where blind
  • Inclusion

    In the 1900s, students with disabilities began being integrated into general education classrooms
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    In 1922, the development of special education as a profession began
  • Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka

    Parents of students with disabilities advocate that their children weren't receiving adequate education and it challenged segregation.
  • Mainstream

    In 1968 students with mild disabilities were mainstreamed with students without disabilities
  • IDEA

    Originally created in 1975, this act ensured all children and youth with disabilities had the right to access free, appropriate, public education. In 1990 this act was expanded into the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
  • ADA

    In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities act was signed into law and it ensured the right to nondiscriminatory treatment in other aspects of life.
  • No Child Left Behind

    Standard-based reform was passed into law
