Frederick Douglass and the North Star
Fredrick Douglas was a runaway slave who fought for other slaves freedom and independence. He was an abolitionist leader. Soon after he wrote a newspaper article that was called "The North Star" because when slaves were escaping they followed the north star to guide them to freedom. -

The Compromise of 1850 was five separarte bills passed by the United States. This act was an attempt to gather a compromise with the North and the South. It kept a balance between slave states and free states. -
The Kansas/Nebraska Act and popular sovereignty
It divided states of Missouri and Iowa and the territory of Minnesota into two new territories named Kansas and Nebraska. This act was compromised, constructed on the doctrine of Popular Sovereignty. It hepled decided to help them decide if they wanted slaves or not. -

Bleeding Kansas was violence between pro and anti-slavery towns. It was a series of bloody political confrontations, which led to burning building and vandalism on both sides. John Brown who was stongly against slavery, murders pro slave supporters. -
The Dred Scott decision
Dred Scott was a slave taken from a slave state to a free state. Sent back to the south, Scott sues claiming he is free since he lived in a free state. Supreme Court says he is property and has no right to sue, anyone with African American blood could never be a citizen. -
The Election of Abraham Lincoln
Southern states wanted to break away from the United States since they feared that Lincoln might abolish slavery. He vowed to keep the county united and western territories free from slavery. Later on, South states broke away from the United states and fromed a new nation calling themselves the Confederate States of America. -
