Important Events in Special Education History

  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This act was signed into law by President Johnson and it made it so the federal government was to protect and provide for students from disadvantaged backgrounds so they would have equal acess to public education. Within the act, there is a component that encouraged states to create and improve education for students with disabilities through a grant program. I am placing it on the timeline because this is the benchmark for improving education for those with disabilities.
  • Education for all Handicapped Children's Act

    Education for all Handicapped Children's Act
    This act, signed into law by President Ford requirs that all children, regardless of their disability get to have a free and appropriate education. This law was an amendment of the Education of All handicapped ACt of 1974, I chose the amendment because it is what makes the free and appropriate education mandatory.This also made it for those with learning disabilities in the general classroom could now qualify for special education. This act shows the continuing improvement for special education.
  • EAHCA with Addition of Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    EAHCA with Addition of Handicapped Children's Protection Act
    This ammendment to the EAHCA made clear that students and parents had rights. This also created intervention programs for children 3-5 years old. The Children's Protection act allowed it for parents to be involved when the development of and IEP is happening. This act is significant because it was the first step to the creation of IDEA.
  • Americans with Disablities Act

    Americans with Disablities Act
    This Act was passed by congress because they felt it was neccessary since school districts have been failing the meet any previous laws requirements. This made it so there is not any discrimination between those with diabilities and those without in the school and workplace.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Act
    This is when the EAHCA changed to IDEA which is what we still call it today.The old law when through changes further showing the effort to make people with disabilities get what they deserve. One of the major changed is about making sure students were recieving education that helped them transition from school to the real world. I think that part is important because this helps capable people with disabilities productive members of society.
  • IDEA Reauthorized

    IDEA Reauthorized
    Adding the the law again shows further effort to make life for those with disabilities better. They now require a general classroom teacher to be a member of an IEP team. This also includes students in statewide assessments. This made it so there are higher expectations for students with disabilities which makes the school accountable for ensuring they are successful.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    This act is the foundation to try to get students to improve performance elementary and secondary schools. This provides oppertunity for school to get additional funds as long as students are meeting standards. these guideline create even higher accountability for schools to make sure their students are successful.
  • More IDEA Improvement

    More IDEA Improvement
    This marks more ammendments to IDEA in an effort to increase its effectiveness. This allows for school to use a response-to-intervention approach in oder to determine specific learning disabilities. This helps when it comes to finding out how to best give a student what they need in order to be successful in the classroom. It also allows federal funds to be used for early intervention services.
