    Roger Williams was forced to leave Massachusetts for his opinions about the ways of the Puritans. He believed that the Puritans should split entirely from the Church of England. When he was forced to leave, he took a few followers with him and settled in Rhode Island.

    Anne Hutchinson’s arrival
    Anne Hutchinson disagreed with teachings of the Puritans and the leaders of the Puritans. She spoke out and was expelled from Massachusetts. She settled in Rhode Island.
  • Rhode Island receives Charter

    Rhode Island receives Charter
    King Charles ll granted a Charter of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and in result gave much of the new Charter Colony self-government. This charter assigned rules of government but still allowing freedom within them.
