  • European Trade With Africa Becomes Well Established

    By 1850, European trade with the African continent was in full swing, with European trading posts reaching farther and farther into the interior of Africa. European trade with the continent was established 2000 years ago, but around 1850 trade became a major industry.
  • Colapse of British East India Company

    A mutiny by Indian sepoy regulars in the British East India Comanpy Army in India leads to the collapse ofthe British East India Company and the establishment of the new British Raj, which would rule India until its independence. India is so valuable to the British the it is called the "Jewel in the Crown," and Queen Victoria changes her title to include Empress of India
  • Suez Canal Completed

    The Suez Canal was a project undertaken by the Egyptian government with financial aid and planing from the French, it cuts through the Sinai Peninsula and connects the Medditeranean and Red seas. After the French pulled out of the project and left the Egyptians in serious debt, the British stepped in and took control of Egyptian finances, and later vontrolled the whole country. The British would step in and take over weak countries many times over the next century.
  • Berlin Conference

    The Berlin Conference was a conference between the major powers of Europe splitting Africa between them. This conference payed no attantion to the ethnic and linguistic boundries of Africa and ultimatley caused ethnic tensions and struggles in these new colonies
  • Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne in Hawaii

    She wil be the only female ruler and the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, she was overthrown by a force of US Marines and Hawaii was annexed by the US
  • Italians defeated in Ethiopia

    An Italian army under the command of General Oreste Baratieri is defeated by an Ethiopian force under the command of Emperor Menelik II. Poor morale in the Italian brigades combined with out-dated equipment and the overwhelming odds of 6-1 won the day for the Ethiopians, securing Ethiopian independence.
  • Beggining of Spnish-Americna War

    This war between Imperial Spain and the United States of America gave the US control over Puerto Rico, the Phillipenes, and Guam.
  • 1st Boer War

    This war between Dutch Afrikanners and British Colonists is fought over South Africa, and ends in the expulsion of the Boers from South Africa and the establishment of British Control over the area.
  • Height of European domination of Africa

    By the outbreak of the Great War, all of africa, with the exceptions of Ethiopia and Liberia is under the control of a major European power
