The Suez Canal was a project undertaken by the Egyptian government with financial aid and planing from the French, it cuts through the Sinai Peninsula and connects the Medditeranean and Red seas. After the French pulled out of the project and left the Egyptians in serious debt, the British stepped in and took control of Egyptian finances, and later vontrolled the whole country. The British would step in and take over weak countries many times over the next century.
