    Bartholomeu Dias travels southern tip of Africa
    Portuguese navigator Bartholmeu Dias is the first European to travel around the southern tip of Africa.Dias became the first Eurpean mariner. Not only did he travel the Southern tip of Africa, he also opened the way for a sea route from Europe to Asia. Bartholomeu Dias opened the door, and increased trade with India and other Asian powers. This expedition did not only sail south, but it also sailed west along the west coast of Africa.

    Portuguese explorer Vasco De Gama lands on National Coast
    On July 7, 1497, after hard work and the building of two ships in which were called the - Saint Gabriel and the Saint Raphel. Vasco De Gama set sail for India, with five extra boats, and a crew in which consisted of 200 men. Unlike other explorers, Vasco De Gama set west in order to avoid the coast of Africa. On November 22, all the ships rounded the Cape of Good Hope. After the long voyage, in May of 1498 De Gama arrived in Calicut India.

    Jan Van Riebeeck and his ninety men landed in 1652 at the Cape of Good Hope. The three ships, Drommedaris, Reijger and Goede Hoop, allowed Jan van Riebeeck and the rest of his crew to travel through Texel, and the Netherlands. He landed at the Cape in April 1652

    1856- Natal seperates from the Cape Colony
    On 15 July 1856, Natal Colony was separated from the Cape Colony. The Cape Governor still had his possition in which was called "High Commissioner." Ten years later, in 1866, the Mpondo Paramount was invaded by Natal. In 1884 Natal took over Port St Johns on the same exact day that Cape Colony attempted to occupy.

    1879- British defeat the Zalus in Natal
    Army consisted of 1,200 men. British defetated an army of 2,000 Zulus. The Zulu warriors were placed in by age, their "standard" equipment the shield and the stabbing spear. The Zulu King allowed " Zulu hegemony " in Southern Africa.

    The 1910 the Union of South Africa was established. After the 1910 elections - Louis Botha became the first prime minister of the Union. He was a member of the Union Goverment. Although South Africa was not a British colony, it was not an independent country either.
