The Britsh had begun to flood the Chinese market with opium after the Chinese had refused trade with them. The illegial smuggling of drugs into China angered them causing them to start an all out war in an attempt to end the smuggling. -

Treaty of Nanjing
The Treaty of Nanjing was a treaty signed by Great Britan, and the Qing dynasty in order to end the first opium war. The Treaty was unfair against China. It increased Foreign trade, The Qing Dynasty had to pay the British Govnment, and Hong Kong was turned into a british Colony. -
Treaty of Kanagawa
This was a treaty established between the U.S and Japan and it opened up new ports to U.S trade in China. -
Queen Victoria is crowned Empress of India
In 1877 Queen Victoria was crowned Empress of India. India was already under British controle, but this tied India closer to Britian and strengthend future ties. -
Boxer Rebellion
The Boxer Rebellion was a violant rebellion that took place in China. It was a violant uprising twords against foreigners, Christian missionarys, and Imperalism in general. The Empress, empress Dowager Cixi, was hesitant at first but eventully suported the rebellion and offically declared war on foreign powers. -
Open Door Policy
The open door policy was a Policy put in place by the untied states that disbaned Chinas right to private trade and said it was an open market. -
Xinhai Revolution
This was a revolution that took place in China in 1911 in order to over throw the Qing dynasty and put in the republic of China.
