    On this day the suez canal was opened to navigation. Ferdinand de Lesseps would later attempt, unsuccessfully, to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama.

    On this day there was a conference that agreed that any european country can claim land in Africa but only if they notify other nations. Also it had to show that they controlled the area they were claiming.

    This is important because it shows the beginning of Spain's downfall as one of the major European countries in imperialism. The United States rises with new territories gained from the Spanish, and become more powerful and wealthy in the near future.
