    The Monroe Doctrine was a US policy directed towards the Western Hemisphere. It stated that the United States would not tolerate European powers interfering with the Western Hemisphere, and if the European powers did interfere, then the United States would retaliate with war.

    The Opium Wars were two armed conflicts in China between Western countries. The first Opium War was between China and Britain. The second was between China, Britain, and France. These wars were due to the opium drug that was being illegally brought to China
  • Sues Canal built

    Sues Canal built
    The Suez Canal is a 100 foot canal that connects the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The construction began and digging was at first done with picks and shovels. It was four years behind construction because of labor disputes and a cholera epidemic.

    Boer War
    Diamonds, gold, and other major resources caused conflict between the Boer states and Britain. The Boers launched a guerilla war which ended in 1902 when the British ended Boer resistance.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    A Chinese secret group, the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists began attacking foreigners and Chinese Christians. Boxers blamed their poor standard of living on foreigners who were colonizing their country. The Boxer Rebellion spread but ended in 1901.

    Revolution of 1911
    A group of revolutionaries in southern China led a successful revolt against the Qing Dynasty. This established its place in the republic of China and ended the imperial system.

    The US built a 50 mile canal to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was deemed impossible but became a successful shortcut from Europe to Asia.
