Impact of WWI on the Middle East

  • Sykes-Picot Agreement

    Great Britian and French leaders had a secret meeting to divide up the Ottoman Empire's land. They were planning to split up this area with no regard to the different types of ethnic groups. When they did this it caused much violence because of the different people being mixed together.
  • Balfour Declaration

    Britian came up with the Balfour declaration. This declaration was to have the Jewish people live in Palestine. Britain believed bringing back the Jewish to the place where they lived in the bible would gain the Jews support in the war. The only problem with this was that Arabs were already living there and when Jews started immigrating to Palestine it started much violence between the two.

    During World War One The Ottoman joined forces with the Germans. When the Allies won the war the empire's territory was taken over by Europeans. They later split up the land with no regard to the differnt religions.
  • Persian Famine

    After World War One Iran was under British rule and when the British experienced financial problems so did the Iranians. After World War one the British had damges and just over looked there famine. About 8-10 million people died during the two years of famine.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations
    The League of Nations was created to split up the conquerd Ottoman land. The land was split with no regard to the religious groups. The countires were ruled by either the British or French.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    The Treaty of Versailles was created to keep peace. When the Arabs felt betrayed by the peace treaty because they already had another agreement. The agreement caused the British to fight in Iraq.
  • Arab and Jews riot

    Arab and Jews riot
    Arab Muslims and Jews located in Jerusalem began to argue over their religious rights. This resulted in riots and British bring troops in. The weeks of rioting leaves many wounded or dead.
  • Arab revolt

    The three year Arab revolt took place in Palestine. The Arabs who were living there were unhappy with the mandate where the British were in control of them. The British had a shortage of troops in Palestine and were not expecting the revolt to be so strong. This was all an effect of the forming of countries with no regard to the different people
  • The Suez Canal Crisis

    The Suez Canal Crisis
    Since the British had once had control over Egpyt they also had control over the Suez Canal. The British gave the Egyptians their independence with one term, they still were able to use the Suez Canal. When new power came to Egypt they wanted to rid all British involvment in there country.
  • Palestine Liberation organization

    The Palestine Liberation Organization was created to help to bring Palestinian groups together. There goal was to rid Palestine of Isreal power and all together the state of Israel.
