    In 1768, James Cook was in charge of an expedition on the converted coal carrier HMS Endeavour. Cook then set out to see if there was a Great South Land, which navigators had believed existed for hundreds of years.

    Between 1788 and 1868 approximately 160,000 convicts were sent to Australia. In 1788, there had been over 300,000 Aboriginal people in mainland Australia but by 1888 there were an estimated 80,000.

    The Age of Macquarie

    From 1815 the Colonial Government decided to promote the migration of free settlers and limit squatter leases to 14 years. Convicts and settlers who came to Australia found that in comparison to Europe, conditions were very good and with hard work and determination they could grow better crops.

    About one third of migrants who came to Australia between 1830 and 1850 paid their own way. They encouraged their relatives in England to come to Australia and enjoy the wealth and comfort.
