  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    a slave rebellion that took place in Southampton County, Virginia, rebel slaves killed about 55 to 65 white people, the highest number of fatalities caused by any slave uprising in the American South. The rebellion was put down within a few days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months afterwards.

  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Peace treaty between the United States and Mexico that ended the Mexican War. The treaty was signed on Feb. 2, 1848, in the village of Guadalupe. It confirmed U.S. claims to Texas and set its boundary at the Rio Grande. Mexico also agreed to cede to the United States California and New Mexico.
  • Compromise of 1850

    A package of five bills passed in the United States, which defused a four-year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican-American war. The compromise, avoided secession or civil war and reduced conflict for four years.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Supreme Court ruling was handed down on March 6, 1857. Chief Justice Taney delivered the opinion of the Court, Dred Scott would remain a slave due to the fact that a slave is not a person but instead a piece of property.
