How the Treatment of Women has Changed Over Time and Stayed the Same

    In the Americas, Africa, and Eurasian areas during the time from 600 AD to 1450 AD, altough the change of women's social structure to lowered positions in society in this time period was prevelant, women's freedoms in the early Song Dynasty, Vietnam, and the Mongol Empire show a continuity of women's freedoms and rights actually imrpoving in this time.

    Women during the Tang Dynasty

    During the Tang Dynasty which lasted from 618 to 907, women were treated not as equals to men, but not nearly as bad as they have been in other cultures. Women could have positions in court, could trade, could be poets and more. This is a continuity event because it continues the trend of women being treated relatively well. This event is social because it explains how women were treated in this social structure.

    Women in Japan During the Heian Period

    In Japan during the Heian Period which started in 794, women actually relatively free. They could help their husband with his work, could be writers/poets, and were not bound to their homes. One famous women writer wrote the Tale of Genji. This event is a continuity event because it continues the trend of this time period of women not being treated as poorly as other time periods. This is a social event because it is telling how women fit into the social structure of Japan.

    Women in Korea During Koryo Dynasty

    In Korea during the Koryo Dynasty founded in 918, women were not treated well. While a small percentage of women could participate in trade or some degree of freedom, most would rarely ever leave their home. They would often be segregated from men as well. This event is a change event, because it displays particularly poor treatment of women during this time period. This is a social event because it shows women's treatment in the social structure of this society.

    In Vietnam around the 10th Century, when it gained independence, women had more freedom. At this time, their Chinese counterparts did not have as much freedom as them, the Vietnamese women were even able to form a rebellion led by the Trung Sisters. This event is a continuity event, becuase it shows women having more rights/freedoms then most others in this time period. This event is social because it shows where women fit into the social structure of this society.

    In the 10th century in China during early Song Dynasty, women's rights had continued to improve. They were given oppurtunities for work, and even though they had arranged marriages, the women did have power to divorce, which was a large improvement. This event is a continuity event because it shows improving treatment of women as the society went on, and overall better treatment of women.

    During the era when the Seljuk Turks dominated the Middle East, starting in 1037, women were not treated very well. Their social lives were quite limited, and they did not have any influence on the arts due to them being constantly secluded from society. This is a social event because it shows where women fit in social class system of this society.

    In the late Song Era in China around the 13th Century, the treatment of women began to suffer. Women were given less oppurtunities, and their overall rank as a member of society was lessened. One example of their suppression is the infamous foot binding. This event is a social event because it relates to social structure and the treatment of a class. This event is also a change event because it counters the trend of the poor treatment of women in socieites of this time period.

    In the Aztec Empire in the Americas around the 14th century, women were not treated as poorly as they were in many other societies in that time period. Women in the Aztec Empire could inherit land, and would not have to be ranked extremely low in society. They were also highly valued due to their weaving ability. This event relates to social because it involves social structure. It is a continuity event, because it shows how the treatment of women was fair compared to many other societies.

    In South America in the Incan Empire around the early 14th Century, women were treated relatively poorly due to rituals such as them being forced to sew for the government to create cloth and being forced to serve their state and religion. Small girls would often be drafted to be concubines. This is a change event, because it details how women were poorly treated in this society, which was not normal for this time period. It is a social event because it details how a social class is treated.

The women were independent, had property rights, and could move as they pleased thanks to the lack of foot binding. This event is social because it details the social place of women in social structure.
