After Japan’s surrender in 1945, the Viet Minh formed a government and declared Vietnam’s independence and made Ho Chi Minh president.

From December 1946, the French and the Viet Minh were involved in a war with each other that would last for another nine years.

By 1952, the Viet Minh had control of the north, with its capital established at Hanoi.

France finally withdrew from Vietnam after their defeat by Viet Minh forces at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu on 13 March 1954.
