  • War Refugee Board (WRB)

    War Refugee Board (WRB)
Roosevelt created the War Refugee Board (WRB) to try to help people threatened by the Nazis. Despite its late start, the WRB's programs helped save some 200,000 lives. With WRB funding, for example, Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg rescued thousands of Hungarian Jews by issuing them special Swedish passports. Some 1,000 refugees were rescued and brought to an army camp in Oswego, New York, but Roosevelt would not expand the program.
