  • Franz Ferdinand assassination

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the terrorist group called The Black Hand while visiting Sarajevo. This soon to be leader and his wife were shot by a young member of the group named Gavrilo Prinicip. The hostility towards these forign rulers was shared by many people in the country. This one act by this one man helped spur a World War.

    Austria-Hungary sent troops in response to the assassination of the Archduke.

    Germany officialy declares war on France for tactical leverage and purposes.

    Because of previous promises to Belgium, Great Britain took lead of protecting them when Germany invaded their neutral territory. This caused Great Britain to enter the war on Germany.

    The United States officialy declares their neutrality. This is because the U.S had so many European decendents, particularly from Germany that they could not in all fairness choose a side that all agreed on.

    Japan was dragged into the war like most countries were, through alliences. When Great Britain declared war on Germany, Japan also declared war to help G.B.

    The Battle of Marne was the first battle of World War One. It was a 7 day battle fought between the Allies and the German Army. The Allies were victorious.

    William P. Frye was a simple cargo ship that was carrying wheat from America to Europe. This unarmed ship was sunk by German U boats. This angered Americans greatly.
  • Peace agreement

    Conel Edward House, advisor to President Wilson, suggested that the president sail to Europe to arrange a peace agreement. An agreement was finally reached. The agreement was called the Sussex Pledge. This pledge stated that U-boats must surface before they strike to let the other ship know its coming.

    Lusitania sunk
    A British ocean liner that was sunk off the coast of Britain. This ship was sunk by German U-boats under the claim that it was carrying weapons. Many people died.

    A German professor from Cornell bombed a U.S senate. This demonstrates the contiversal feelings in the United States about the European War.

    The press was through the roof when signs of a German spy ring was found. But this also put the country even more on edge.

    These unofficial American camps were set up by Leonard Wood to train soldiers. These camps produced astounding numbers of soldier, up to 16,000.

    An Italian ship was attacked by German U-boats, 27 U.S citizens were killed during yet another one of Germanys attacks. Again Germany likes to sink boats its kind of their thing.

    President Wilson pulled together an army of 142,000 soldiers. He also requested a rescue army of 400,000 men.

    Because of the U-boat attacks, Wilson decides to break ties with Germany.

    Zimmerman Telegram
    A telegram sent by Arthur Zimmerman to the Mexican government telling them that if America was to attack Germany that they should go a head and attack from the south. This request was backed by a promise to help them get their old territory back from the U.S. This telegram was intercepted and more or less was not appreciated.
