  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    In 1820, Missouri requessted to be admitted as a slave state. At the time, the United States contained twenty-two states, evenly divided between slave and free. Admission of Missouri as a slave state would upset that balance. By having this "balance" the north and south had conflitcing ideas on economy because of the effect slaves had on the south's economy. This caused turmoil between the states because of the the differences in trading goods.
  • The Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave that was freed and had lived in 2 free states for much time. His master took him back and Scott wanted to sue his master for his freedom. The case was taken to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court stated that as a former slave, he had "no rights which the white man was bound to respect" therefore returning to be a slave. This created major anitslavery concepts in the north.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    Slaves were being freed very frequently from their masters because of the "underground Railroad" causing anger in slave owners. The Fugitive Slave Act created a a law that allowed people to hunt down former slaves to be retrieved in free states and return them to work.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe was an influential book written about slaves in a completel diferent perspective. It showed the horrible acts that were actually happening in the plantations and how pooly people were being reated. The south had been releasein paintings and books and such that showed heir slaves being very happy wih doing hier wok. This brought attention to the north and was one of the most influential things that caused the war.
