  • Sugar act 1764

    Sugar act 1764
    This happened because they wanted lower tariff rates on sugar, lumber, and additional goods.
    The purpose of this was to raise revenue as a result of the French and Indian War and to end colonial smuggling.
    The reaction deeply affected colonial merchants and shippers. Also had a lack of competition that resulted in higher prices and reduced currency. Along with that it caused boycotts to happen but in 1766 it was repealed.
  • Stamp Act 1765

    So tax was directly levied on colonists on required stamps on commercial contracts, legal documents, newspapers, pamphlets, playing cars, and dice.
    The purpose of this was to generate revenue for British garrisons and forts in colonies and the frontier.
    This caused a reaction of people boycotting and having nonimportant agreements but in 1766 it was repealed.

    It was a series of acts to assert British authority.
    The purpose behind this was to raise revenue for royal governors and judges. Also for taxes on glass, lead, paper, and paint. Along with writs of assistance.
    This had caused a reaction of boycotts and letters from James Otis, Samuel Adams, and John Dickinson
  • Boston Massacre 1770

    Boston Massacre 1770
    This was a street fight that occurred on March 5, 1770, between a "patriot" mob, throwing snowballs, stones, and sticks, and a squad of British soldiers. Several colonists were killed and this led to a campaign by speech-writers to rouse the ire of the citizenry.
    Henry Pelham created a painting and it was distributed amongst the people and it caused Britain to have a negative light on them
  • Boston Tea Party 1773

    It was to protest the British Parliament's tax on tea. The demonstrators boarded the ships and threw the chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. The British government considered the protest an act of treason and responded harshly.
    The purpose was to help accelerate and intensify colonial support for the American Revolution.
  • Coercive Act 1774

    Coercive Act 1774
    This was a series of harsh and grudging laws constructed by the British in response to the Boston Tea Party. These laws were intended to make Massachusetts pay for its resistance, damage, and destruction of tea by closing down the Boston Harbor.
    The purpose was meant to break Massachusetts Bay and warn the other colonies of the consequences of rebellious behavior.

    removing the colonies from the protection of the crown, banning trade with them, and allowing the seizure of American ships at sea. This caused doomed colonial trade vessels to attacks by England as well as other countries
