    In 1854, diplomats recommended to President Franklin Pierce that the United States buy Cuba from Spain. The Spanish responded by saying that they would rather see Cuba sunk in the ocean. It was important so then we could become an imperialized without saying we are doing it.

    Cuba's first fight for independence was led by native-born sugar planters and other wealthy natives this war lasted ten years from 1868-1878. This was important because sugar was in high demand for the U.S. so then we were willing to help them.

The importance is that it shows that we are not just interested in the imperialism and they want better for people in other places.

    It was right after we took high ground from the rebels at the battle of San Juan Hill and the rebels ran and took ships out of the bay and American ships were waiting for them. This was one of the deciding factors on the Spanish on whether they were going to be able to win the war or not. This gave America confidence and win the war.

    On December 10th, 1898 the United States and Spain met in Paris to agree on a treaty. The Spanish agreed to free Cuba and give the United States the islands of Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States. Spain also sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million. This is important because it has helped on our imperialism journey and had more people to help us to succeed as an imperialist.
