  • Sputnik 1

    On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first ever man-made satelite. It had 2 different radios on board that took measurements on the Atmosphere, and helped us learn about the Ionsphere. It was the first major step toward the internet.
  • Explorer 1

    After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the fear rose that they could use satelites to guide long range missiles. Eisinhower realised that they needed a space program desperatly, so NASA was born. In 1958 the Explorer 1 was launched.
  • ARPA

    The same year that Sputnik 1 was launched, president Eisinhower created ARPA(Advanced Research Projects Agency). This will later be re-named to DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). Then switched back. Then switched again.
  • J.C.R. Licklider

    IN 1962 J.C.R. Licklider saw a world where everyone could easily access any information at any time. He was the head of the first computer research facility at D.A.R.P.A. (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) a.k.a. A.R.P.A.
  • IPTO

    ARPA creats the Information Processing Techniques, or IPT. It was created to help gather information aboout technology issues.
  • Paul Baran

    Paul Baran, The inventor of the field of Packet Switching leavs RAND to become a private investor, but not before doing extremly useful research in the field.
  • The Internet Protocol Suite

    The Internet Protocol Suite was created to specify how data was supposed to get to there, and how. Often known as the TCP/IP, it was created by DARPA in 1982.
  • CSNET

    The CSNET was used to connect Universities around North America. There was also the EUnet that was used to connect research facilities around Europe. To those that had access to them, there was a wealth of information, and possibilities.

    The internet exploded after the creations of CSNET and EUnet. It became a good source of information.
  • Internet Ownership

    Thanks to the massive amount of new users on the internet, the U.S. Government handed over ownership to a couple of well known organizations. This made it easier for anyone to post on the internet at any time.
  • IPod

    IPod
    Apple comes out with the IPod 9 months after coming out with ITunes. You were able to download music on to it, and then play it whenever you wanted. It was a majour sted toward getting technology, and the internet everywhere.
  • IPad

    Apple came out with the IPad on April 3rd, 2010. It had the ability to use the internet ina number of different ways such as ITunes, Safari, The App Store, and millions of downloadable games. It is one of the most widely known pieces of technology today.
