  • Invention of Modem

    Invention of Modem
The researchers of Bell Laboratories created the modulator demodulator; modem. A modem is a network hardware device that sends and receives data from computers by converting signals, allowing for communication between computers. While modems were originally used by North American air defence departments, this creation of Bell Labs opened the way for modems being used for commercial purposes.

  • Packet-Switching Technology

    Packet-Switching Technology
In his doctoral thesis as a student of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Leonard Kleinrock publishes his findings on how to use pocket-switching technology for networking. These networks would break up the data into smaller component of information before sending them off. This allowed for more people to access the same information, made business communications stable, and served as an efficient method of transporting real-time audio and video.
  • Idea of the Galactic Network

    Idea of the Galactic Network
In MIT, J.C.R Licklider writes memos and discusses about the concept of a Intergalatic Network; where a network of connected computers would allow for the user to access information and programs from any corner of the world. His idea is extensively similar to the Internet we have today, being linked with how most data is freely accessed and also is much shared.
  • ARPANET was founded

    ARPANET was founded
Advanced Research Projects Agency Network was the ancestor of the current network and a wide-area network. Funded by the U.S. Defence Department, its purpose was to serve as means to share and connect resources of the computers of research institutions financed by the Pentagon. It was the network that become the basis of what is Internet now days by establishing the first computer-to-computer link, doing so by sending information in small parts.

  • Invention of Email

    Invention of Email
Working as an ARPANET contractor, Ray Tomlinson invented the email and in turn, a way of indicating the addresses and whom the "letters" would go to. He picked the simple @ symbol to indicate the user from the host; sending messages from one computer to another. His invention has gone on to be the most important of Internet applications, which is very widely used. It took us from ARPANET to the Internet.
  • TCP/IP is invented

    TCP/IP is invented
The Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, is a set of components of communication protocols, which serve the purpose of interconnecting network devices which are on the Internet. Created by Vint Cerf and Robert E. Khan, it is responsible for connecting data, the technology that makes Internet possible. The TCP layer provides the message to transmit and the IP layer provides a means of transmitting it. Almost all computers contain TCP/IP, with each separate computer having a unique IP.
  • The Domain Name System

    The Domain Name System
In work done within the Internet Engineering Task Force and with documents published in the Request For Comment series, attempts were made to make it easier to reach hosts throughout the Internet. Out of those came the DNS; the way internet domains are converted into numeric addresses. This also provided a helpful way to remember Internet handles and gave us familiar host names such as .com, .gov, .edu and more.
  • The birth of the WWW

    The birth of the WWW
A British scientist at CERN by the name of Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web. It was developed with the purpose of meeting the demands for information-sharing between scientists at research institutions and universities. It is essentially an information space where resources such as documents are contained, and then accessed through the Internet; an information-sharing model built on the Internet.

  • Creation of HTML

    Creation of HTML
Developed by Tim Berners-Lee, he established the HyperText Markup Language as the publishing language of the Web. A technology still used as of today, HTML allows for a website to be created and then viewed by people connected on the Internet with interpreted text, graphics, visuals, etc. In simple terms, it describes the structure of the Web pages by using the method of markup.
  • First Website Launched

    First Website Launched
Wanting to prove the extreme potential of the World Wide Web, Time Berners-Lee with a team of CERN engineers worked to do so by launching the very first website. It was a website dedicated to information concerning the World Wide Web, which ran on a computer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Having celebrated its' 27th birthday, no original version remains, though a refined version can be found at (https://www.w3.org/History/19921103-hypertext/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html).
  • Invention of Mosaic Beta

    Invention of Mosaic Beta
The first popular browser before others such as Firefox or Internet Explorer was Mosaic Beta. Created by Marc Andreessen, it helped largely spread the use and knowledge of not only the Internet, but also WWW and other Web sites. Mosaic was also altered, making a version of it for Macintosh later on.
  • "The Tech" Made Available

    "The Tech" Made Available
MIT's campus newspaper called "The Tech" became the very first newspaper to be made available from access to reading on the Web. The Web Server it was on was specifically was the first to allow for a complete newspaper, paving the path for any newspaper or online magazine which came after it. Considering the fact that, online print now stand in such a strong ground that it is big enough to possibly replace hard copy version, makes the launch of "The Tech" very notable.
  • Netscape Navigator

    Netscape Navigator
Developed by Jim Clark and Marc Andreeson of Netscape Communications, Netscape Navigator was a web browser which changed the way masses of people used and accessed the Internet, for it was really their first exposure to the World Wide Web. Netscape did so by extremely popularizing World Wide Web in a way none other could do. But the launching of Microsoft's Windows 95 in the same year lead to the "browser war" that took place between the two.
  • Today's eGaints

    Today's eGaints
eCommerce and the spark of online shopping started with the launch of the two major eGaints present; Amazon and eBay. Both of these went live in the same year of 1995, Amazon in July and eBay in September. These both worked to transform the way people shop and what kinds of goods they buy for it looked people to buy exactly what the wanted, all while making the prices much cheaper.
  • Net Radio is introduced

    Net Radio is introduced
Founded by Norman Hajjar, Radio HK was the first of its kind, being the only full-time Internet radio station; an audio service transmitted solely through the Internet. Helping the digital music revolution, it began by broadcasting unsigned and dependent bands. The radio station, which held a trial license from ASCAP, reached people in an estimated number of 46 countries. It is credited with having kickstarted the broadcasting of Internet music.
  • Google's creation

    Google's creation
Incorporation of Google took place at the hands of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who while working from their dorm rooms, created search engine that would use links to individual pages. This would go on to be the Google search engine. With simply wishing to organize the world's information and make it accessible, Larry and Sergey created a technology company that builds much of the products used by people, like Youtube, Android and of course, Google Search.
  • JavaScript introduced

    JavaScript introduced
First launched as LiveScript with Netscape Navigator 2.0, the name change came after a collaboration with a company that sold computers. JavaScript is one of the core technologies used to connect on the Web, helping interactivity within Web sites. Java also supports Ajax, the crucial Web technology that enables interactivity on sites such as Google Docs, Flickr and blogs.
  • MafiaBoy Attack

    MafiaBoy Attack
With the popularity and benefits of the Internet, also came the unneeded disruptions. One of these was done by the hands of a 15 year old came Mike "Mafiaboy" Calce. Mike launched a DDos attack; making an online source appear unavailable and cause a denial of service from the customers. This attack affected 11 major Web companies such as eBay, Amazon and Yahoo, costing them estimated billion pounds in damages.
