    Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield's invention proved to be very dangerous due to it being heated over an open flame. During the 1920's women began to use clothes irons to straighten their hair. Eventually this version was abandoned in the 1960's.

    Walter Sammons was the first person to patent and claim the invention of the hot comb. He received a patent for the hot comb on December 21, 1920. He claimed he invented it to "get the nappy out of hair." He originally invented it for black men and women, but eventually it was used by people of every race.

    In 1926, an electric hot comb was put on the market by Whites Manufacturing Co. It operated on batteries, hence its name electric comb.

    During the 1970's, the newest model of a hair straightener was called the curl tamer. It had a wide ironing piece to help women with thick curly hair ensure they got it all straight.

    In 2004, a company called Good Hair Day (GHD) launched a product called to the pink iron to appeal to more women and salons.

    Based on popular belief, in 2011 the best flat iron was the Chi straightening iron. It came with its own case fitted for it and the matching color.
