  • Perkins Institution for the Blind

    Perkins Institution for the Blind
    This was the first school, created specifically for students who were blind. They advocated and helped other schools around the world, they created a system for reading and printing embossed text. Eventually, this became the system used for blind education.
  • Compulsory Education Law

    Compulsory Education Law
    This law mandated that all children were required to attend public schools or state accredited private schools. The first state to approve it was Rhode Island. Parents were mandated to enroll their child from the age of six to at least sixteen. This included children with special needs.
  • The Columbia Institution

    The Columbia Institution
    The Columbia Institution was the first institution that was granted by congress for the "deaf,dumb, and blind".   • Beattie vs Board of Education

    Beattie vs Board of Education
    The Wisconsin Supreme Court maintained the ruling where students could be excluded from school based on their disability. The case was based on a student who had facial abnormalities and drools. The teacher described this problem as nauseating, and the court agreed that it consumed too much time and required too much attention.

    The Section 504 if the Rehabilitation Act protected people with disabilities against discrimination.     Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The EAHCA required that public schools accepted federal funds to provide equal access for children with physical and mental disabilities. This act included many details to help protect students with disabilities.
  • American with Disabilities Act

    American with Disabilities Act
    The American with Disabilities Act was signed by President George W. Bush. It was passed to make sure that all individuals with disabilities were granted the same rights in all areas of public rights. This included, jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the public.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990
    IDEA was signed by President George W. Bush in 1990. It is the main framework for educational rights of children with disabilities. It added children affected by traumatic brain injuries and autism as a disability.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This law requires that states tested students in grades third through eighth grade in reading and math. It also required students in high school to be tested in reading and math. Students were required to meet or exceed state standards in reading and math by 2014.
  • IDEA Reauthorized

    IDEA Reauthorized
    The reauthorization of IDEA included changes in the IEP process, due process and student discipline.
