History of Special Education

  • American School for the Deaf

    This school was founded in Hartford, Connecticut and was the first school for disabled children anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. It created a new standardized language - American Sign Language. Many of these institutions were founded on the principle of charity.
  • President Taft Term

    President Taft was in office from March 4th, 1909 to March 4th, 1913. I am related to him, so this is cool!
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This game grants to state schools and institutions that put into place programs to educate students with disabilities. This law brought education into the forefront of the national discussion on poverty and created a commitment to equal access to quality education.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    This sided with students who have intellectual and learning disabilities in state-run institutions. It also called for students with disabilities to be placed in publicly funded settings that met their individual educational needs, based on evaluations.
  • First Center for Independent Living

    This center was made at UC Berkley by Ed Roberts to support people with disabilities so they can live independently. The independent living movement was significant as it led to releases of regulations banning discrimination against people with disabilities in federally funded programs.
  • Section 504

    This is part of the Rehabilitation Act that allows protection from discrimination of special needs and those with disabilities. It is considered the first law that gives protection to students with special needs.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children

    This act ensures that all students with disabilities are educated in public schools. It includes providing free education, special education for students 3-21, supplemental services, due processes, zero reject, and least restrictive environment.
  • Least Restrictive Environment

    This means that with an IEP, students must also be in as many regular education courses as they are able. With this, it is ensured that the student has social experiences. Many students will need an aid for this or additional staff in the regular education classroom.
  • IDEA

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was signed by George W. Bush. It ensures that all children with disabilities are entitled to free appropriate public education to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.

  • IDEA Improvement Act

    This allows for 15% of special education funds to go to general education, in attempts to help special needs students who have not be identified yet. Also, now discrepancy rates are not required when recognizing and classifying students.

  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Congress removed many portions of ESEA about accountability, including the requirements for highly qualified teachers. The main purpose of this is to ensure that every public school provides quality education for all kids, providing an equal opportunity for disadvantaged kids also.
  • Started babysitting a girl with Down Syndrome

    I began watching a little girl with Down Syndrome. This marked my first real experience with someone with a disability, and sparked my interest in working with them.
  • I graduated high school

    I graduated from the Wake County school system. In a few months I would attend NCSU
