The American School for the Deaf originally opened its doors in 1817 under the name of The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. The school opened with only seven students in Hartford, Connecticut. This school was limited to educate students who had a hearing disability.

Brown v. Board of Education was five separate court cases under one name that was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding the desegregation of schools. The court determined that the school systems for black and whites were not equal and violated the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S Constitution.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was signed by Lyndon B. Johnson to support the students of low-income families. ESEA also promoted the state to create and improve the programs available for individuals with disabilities as well as parental involvement. It provides help to meet the student's basic needs, such as free and reduced lunch.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation was put in place to prevent discrimination for individuals with disabilities from any programs that are federally funded. Education Amendments Act increased funding for better education programs to meet the student's special needs by placing them in the appropriate education program. It also allowed the distribution of grants to the state for programs for gifted and talented students.

The Education for All Handicapped Children Act ensures that states provide appropriate free public education for all children with disabilities. It required the school system to identify and set a plan for special education for that student. This law also ensures the effectiveness and effort to educate the students in the least restrictive classroom.

ADA required public accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Busses were required to have the ability to carry passengers who needed accommodations. It also required the modification of things such as water fountains, bathrooms, and serving areas to be of easy access to the individual of special needs.

The No Child Left Behind act was approved by Congress in 2001 and later signed under President George W. Bush in 2002. This law required the federal government to take part in education by having high qualified educators and holding schools accountable for the student's performance. Testing requirements in different subject areas and grade levels were implemented.

Assistive Technology Act for Individuals with Disabilities was authorized in 1988 to increase state funding for technology tools that can help individuals with disabilities. This law was reauthorized in 1994 and once again amended in 2004 under president Bush, to assure the availability of funding for assistive technology.

The Disabilities Education Act, amended by Congress in 2004. It required a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for children with disabilities. The students can receive classes in the least restrictive environment with accommodations provided. Grants were approved for schools to provide early intervention.
