    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement  Act (IDEA)
    On December 3rd, 2004; the President signed the reauthorized IDEA into law. The newly authorized IDEA provisions were placed into action on July 1st, 2005. This reauthorization made changes to the original IDEA such as IEPs, due process, student discipline, RTI model for children with specific learning disability, federally und early intervention services, raising standards for special needs licensure. The Act was reauthorized and expanded as IDEIA
  • The Arc

    The Arc’s Public Policy Goals include many strategies to ensure that the promises of legislation like the IDEA, ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), and other laws are met. The Arc joins partner organizations in advocacy to ensure the needs of students with disabilities are included and properly addressed when education legislation arises.

    Every Student Suceeds Act
    Advances equity by upholding critical protections for America's disadvantaged and high-need students. Introduced so that no child is subject to self contained classrooms and all subject matter is taught to every student in the same setting.   • Council of Administrators of Special Education

    Council of Administrators of Special Education
    International professional organization(affiliated with CEC) that provides its members with support and leadership. Standards include serving exceptional children and their parents, demonstrate proficiency in professional practice, uphold values and ethical knowledge of the profession, support research of scholarly inquiry.
  • Response to Intervention (RTI)

    Response to Intervention (RTI)
    RTI is a multi-tiered intervention used to identify students who need different levels of educational and behavioral intervention. Tier 1 is where screening occurs with classroom and whole group instruction. Tier 2 is reached when more more targeted intervention is needed.     Inclusive Schools Week is an annual event sponsored by the Inclusive Schools Network. Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors.
