History of Special Education

  • American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb

    This was the first school in the United States for special education students. It is now known as the American School for the Deaf. This is important because many schools were created for individuals with disabilities after this school. It also allowed for students with disabilities to get an education
  • Federal Government got involved in Special Education

    This happened right after President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill that opened Gallaudet College (a college for the deaf). The importance of this is that it was the beginning of all the standards we have today. Students slowly received better educations and were integrated into the public schools
