  • Brown v. Board of Education

    A case ruled that segregated schools were not getting equal education (segregated schools are not constitutional). This case mainly dealt with race but started the thoughts of equal education for all students. It made parents of those with students with disabilities think about how their children are segregated and not getting an equal education.

  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    This case sided in favor of students with intellectual and learning disabilities in state-run institutions. The case called for students with disabilities to be placed in publicly funded schools that met their individualized educational needs, based upon a proper and thorough evaluation.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act Signed

    President Gerald Ford signed the Act that is also known as Public Law 94-142. This law required that all schools receiving federal funding, specifically public schools, provide children with disabilities equal access to education. Additionally, they were to be provided one free meal per day.
  • Public Law 99-457

    This law amended the All Handicapped Children Act. It required that individual states provide services to families of children born with disabilities from the time they are born. The All Handicapped Children Act said that these families couldn't get the services until the child was three.
  • Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    A law signed by President Reagan that gave parents of children who had disabilities more say. These parents were able to advocate more for their child's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Randy Travis Released "Forever and Ever, Amen"

  • Public Law 101-476

    This law makes changed to Public Law 94-142. Traumatic brain injury and autism were added and considered new disability categories. Congress also required that these students IEP's must work to help them in post-secondary life.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Formerly called The Education for all Handicapped Children’s Act, this act is an amended version reauthorized by President Clinton. It focused on providing all students with the same curriculum and expanded the "developmental delay" definition to also include students ages 6-9.

  • IDEA Amended by Congress

    The amendments required early intervention for students, greater accountability, improved educational outcomes, and raised standards for special education instructors. It also required a 15% fund shift from special education towards general education if a disproportionate number of students from minority groups were in special ed. classes for reasons other than disabilities.
