    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (PL 89-10) Was passed as a part of President Lyndon B Johnson's "War on Poverty" -Supports many initiatives that help low-income families access high-quality education programs
    -Revisions included free and reduced lunch programs
    -Has been reauthorized every 5 years since its enactment.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    (Orginially known as: Education for All Handicapped Children Act PL 94-142) May be the most monumental legislative event in history for the education of learners who are exceptional -Known as the "mainstreaming law"
    -First Defined: "Least Restrictive Environment"
    -Requires IEPs
  • Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments

    Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments
    Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments (PL 99-457)
    -Requires states to extend free and appropriate education to children with disabilities ages 3-5.
    -Establishes early intervention programs for infants and toddlers with disabilities ages birth-2.

    -Prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in the private sector

    Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1990 (PL 101-476) *Renames and Replaces PL 94-142 -Establishes "people-first" language
    -Adds two new categories of diability: autism and traumatic brain injury
    -Requires states to provide bilingual education programs for students with disabilities
    -Requires the development of individualized transition programs for students with disabilities by the time they reach the age of 16

    -Eliminates short term objectives in an IEP except for students who do not take statewide achievement assessments
    -Allows districts to use a response-to-intervention (RTI) model for determining whether a child has a specific learning disability
