Harriet Tubman was born in Araminta Ross, in Dorchester County, Maryland on 3/6/1820. Born into chattel slavery, Araminty or Minty, was the fifth of nine children, Two of Minty's old sisters were sold to a chain gang, Even as a small child, minty was hired out to different owners. She was put to work with her father who taught her how to lumber. Lumbering increased Minty's physical strength. -

Harriet followed the north star to Pennsylvania she returned to the south 13 times to free her loved ones. She worked as a Conductor to help enslaved people escape. -
Some slaves tried to run away to the North, Slave owners hired slave hunters to track them down and offered significant rewards for their return. Laws made by Congress made it illegal to help runaway slaves in both the north and south. -
Harriet worked as a Union army nurse, scout, and spy during the Civil War, She becomes the first woman in United States History to plan and lead a military raid, helping almost 700 enslaved people in South Carolina.
