The Hammurabi code was one of the earliest legal codes ever written. It was created by the Babylonian king Hammurabi. The code was carved onto a black stone pillar. The code is famous for the phrase "an eye for an eye" for example if you hurt someone and they lost their eye then you would lose your eye. A part of the Hammurabi code that we still use today is "innocent until proven guilty"

The Justinian code was written in 529 by Byzantine emperor Justinian. The code had over 4000 laws and was recorded in four books. The four parts of the code were The law code, the digest, the institutes and the novellae. The Justinian code is connected to law today because it gave women rights such as men being able to leave land to their daughters. -
The common law is the first law that was developed through court decisions. It was created in England nut now is called the common law because it was used almost everywhere. This is connected to law today because even now for a law to be passed it has to go through court. -
The great law of peace established a democracy among 5 Iroquois speaking tribes. The original purpose was to end years of fighting among the 5 tribes. It was recorded on wampum belts. The laws are similar to Canadian laws today because we both have democracies.

The Magna Carta was written in 1215 by King John of England and his barons. It was one of, if not the first written constitution in Europe. The Magna carta stated that he king was not above the law and had to follow it like everyone else. This has impacted our current legal system because the prime minister is not able to do whatever he wants he also follows the law. -
The Napoleonic code was written by emperor Napoleon Bonaparte 1804. The code abolished the feudal system, established right to equality before the law, and serfdoms and and manorial dues were abolished. This is similar to law today because their is still no feudal system since then.
